Assyria is located in north Mesopotamia and situated between four countries: In the north Assyria borders Turkey, the land extends to Haran, Diyarbakir, Edessa and lake van in Turkey. Toward the south Assyrian land extends south of Kirkuk between 200 t0 250 miles south into Mesopotamia ( present day Iraq). Iran is located on the east and the Assyrian land extends east to lake Urmi. Syria is located on the west and the Assyrian land extends west to the Euphrates river.
Two major rivers run through Assyria, the Tigris and the Euhprates. Part of the Tigris river the Upper Zab and Lower Zab are the most important tributaries. Assyria’s major cities of Nineveh, Ashur, Nimrod and Arbel are situated around the Tigris river and the Upper and Lowe Zab.
To the north and east of Assyria lie the Taurus and Zagros mountains. To the west and south lies a great, low limestone plateau. At the southern end of Assyria the gravel plains give way to alluvium deposited by the Tigris river.
To the south of Assyria lies Babylon.
